Whether on stage or on set, I’m at my most ‘me’ when I’m playing someone else. I’ve been privileged to work with some amazing artists on wonderful projects.

My career was launched in 1997 with a year and a half in the cast of the BBC’s EastEnders. It was a baptism of fire in more ways than one. It was the best training in screen acting I could have hoped for. This was followed by various gigs in TV but one favourite was getting to be a Cookson Lady in the mini-series A Dinner of Herbs. Catherine Cookson was a prolific writer from the North East of England and the TV adaptations were beloved in my home as it was were half my family came from. So getting to by Mary Ellen and spend three months in my ‘other’ home of Durham was a joy.

A theatre highlight was playing Perdita in Nick Hytner’s production of The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare on the Olivier stage at the National Theatre in London. Despite my lack of formal training, Hytner gave me the opporuntity to learn guerrilla style from great theatre actors like Deborah Findlay, Julian Wadham, Alex Jennings and Claire Skinner. I was coached by the formidable voice teacher Patsy Rodenberg. It was one of the most glorious summers of my life.

More recently, playing the wife of DI John Bacchus in Inspector George Gently over a few years was great fun. Once again it was a chance to work at ‘home’ in the North East, though I was cast when they shot the series in Ireland. Getting to share a screen with Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby was a real treat.
